Stilldead, I am a guitar player. Many Dead tunes are based on a blues pattern and many of Jerry's solos are based on the pentatonic scales. I would suggest any song that uses a basic I IV V progression. CC Rider would be a great choice (A D E progression). Big Boss Man (E A B). Alambama uses a I V IV progression which is pretty easy. (A E D) Let me know if you need any help.

I would also suggest CC Rider (or See, See, Rider, if you will). It's a very easy three-chord blues. One song that comes to mind that is actually a Grateful Dead song and not one of their blues covers is Loose Lucy, but work on it with the shuffle rhythm that they used when they brought it back into the song rotation circa 1990's, as opposed to the faster tempo they used on Mars Hotel. You could even try to get some mileage out of I Need A Miracle. I was on a cruise ship once and there was a solo guitarist who worked in one of the bars on the boat of whom I made a request for any Grateful Dead songs. He said he didn't know any, but he had one song that he knew they used to play and proceeded to bust out Next Time You See Me.

Thanks a bunch, I am beginning to make sense out of this blues thing after all. I really like playin Deep Elem and GDTRFB, these two rock all over the place... I can't figure out a good strum for willy and the hand jive - if i only had other to back me up... it hold the G for a long time. Any thoughts on that one?

What kind of guitar(s) do you have? I have a Taylor 710 CE and a Big Baby Taylor - love them both. Been all over the world with the 710, it has never let me down.

Happy Holidaze to you and yours.
